Lamp Project - Madson Black

The Blacksmiths Workshop Stepney City Farm were commissioned by Madson Black Fine Chandeliers and Lighting.  The commission was for the restoration of two 18c Plinth Lamps and the manufacture of two exact replicas to be installed at the Whites Club in St James'.

The lamps were originally for candles before being converted to gas sometime, it’s believed, in the 19c.  The materials used in the construction were cast iron and brass and the components were joined together using either rivets or by drilling 'n' tapping.

A percentage of the profits were donated to Stepney City Farm.

Railing Project - School House Mews

The Blacksmiths Workshop Stepney City Farm were commissioned by a private client to manufacture and install a replica set of Victorian railings and gate.

The client’s house is part of a Victorian school that was converted to houses and flats in the 1980's.  The property is in a conservation area and we were able to assist the client in the design to ensure compliance with regulations.

A percentage of the profits were donated to Stepney City Farm.

Restoration - St Johns Church Hampstead

Richard was commissioned to repair and restore a section of Grade1 listed railings at The Parish Church of St John-at-Hampstead.

The railings at the church were installed during the 1700's and survived being taking away during the two world wars.

The section of railings were damaged after being hit by a truck turning left into a side street.

The railing are constructed from wrought iron and cast iron using lead fixings.  The damage to the cast sections were extensive as cast shatters like glass.  As much of the original material as possible was kept and keeping in line with current restoration thinking repairs are visible to assist future generations in assessing the age of ironwork and to tell the story of the church.

Restoration - Kirkaldy Testing Museum

Richard was commission by the Kirkaldy Testing Museum to repair a guide plate from the Victorian testing machine that is the centre point of the museum.  Made of cast iron in the 18th century it had been dropped during routine maintenance.

Cast iron breaks likes glass under impact and the plate had broken into 5 pieces, large and small.  The repair was quite a complicated process.  Modern welding techniques had to be employed to ensure structural integrity, therefore getting the plate to the correct dimensions took time and patience.

The welds have been left visible to assist future generations to assess the age of this important historic machine that helped to drive and improve the industrial revolution.

Railing Project N16

The Blacksmiths Workshop Stepney City Farm were commissioned by a private client to replicate a railing frontage with gate.

The clients had a photo of the front of their property that was taken circa1912.  This showed cast railings and gate which appeared to have undergone repairs at some time, therefore it would have been impossible to have located an original pattern.  In several consultations with the clients a design as close as possible was agreed upon.  We were able to replicate the design in mild steel and fit using traditional fixing methods.

A percentage of the profits have been donated to Stepney City Farm.
